“Jurassic World” has record-breaking opening with $204.6 million

"Jurassic World" topped this weekend box office, grossing an amazing $204.6 million on its debut weekend. It was initially predicted to land $155 million for the weekend but it turns out that the movie surpassed the expectation by the end of the weekend. The dinosaur movie now becomes the second highest grossing movie in its opening weekend domestically of all time, right behind "The Avengers" which grabbed $207.4 million in 2012, AceShowbiz reports.

Not only be successful in domestic theaters, but the action adventure movie also grossed big internationally earning around $307.2 million from 66 markets with a global total of $511.8 million. This marks the largest weekend bow in history, defeating "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II" which grossed $483.2 million. The number of its global total makes "Jurassic World" become the first film to ever cross $500 million in one weekend.

The leading actor in the movie, Chris Pratt, must be very proud of the movie's achievement. He acknowledged everyone behind the movie by posting a message to Facebook. "On behalf of everyone involved in the making of #JurassicWorld, and believe me there are thousands of us, I want to say thank you," the actor said.

He continued, "It feels so wonderful to hear the overwhelmingly positive response. We are incredibly blessed and overcome with joy at the outcome of the movie and couldn't be more appreciative for the amazing support you've shown so far." He also included a link to a box office report about the opening as he ended the message, "This is bigger than all of us. Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

Speaking about the film, Nick Carpou, Universal's president of domestic distribution, said, "It is extraordinary. The film has resonated with audiences around the world." He added, "This is absolutely a four-quadrant movie and is working on so many levels. The release date was awesome, and everybody stayed off of our date."

Meanwhile, comedy movie "Spy" goes down to the second position earning an estimated $16 million domestically. This movie was in the first position in its opening last week with $29 million on hand. On the third position is disaster movie "San Andreas" which grossed approximately $11 million in domestic theaters with a total of $119.3 million.
