Wim Wenders to exec produce “Buena Vista Social Club” sequelSeptember 16, 2015 - 17:04 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Wim Wenders has signed on to executive produce “Buena Vista Social Club: Adios,” the follow-up documentary to his Oscar-nominated “Buena Vista Social Club,” which he co-wrote and directed, according to Variety. Broad Green Pictures announced the sequel at Cannes with Lucy Walker directing and Christine Cowin and Zak Kilberg producing. The film is currently in production and is expected to hit theaters in 2016. Wenders’ film, which was nominated for a best documentary Oscar, centered on efforts by Ry Cooder to bring together prominent Cuban musicians to record an album and to perform in Amsterdam and New York City’s Carnegie Hall. The film included concert footage and interviews with the main performers. It grossed $23 million worldwide. Wenders also received Oscar nominations for “Pina” and “The Salt of the Earth.” The German filmmaker won the Palme d’Or at Cannes for “Paris, Texas”; the Golden Lion for the drama “The State of Things” at Venice; and best director for “Wings of Desire” at Cannes. “Buena Vista Social Club: Adios” will look into the changes and success of the band over the past 20 years against the fast-changing backdrop of Cuba in 2015. Broad Green Pictures is financing the film and leading production alongside Blink TV and Convergent Media; Broad Green has worldwide rights and will distribute in the United States, with Mister Smith Entertainment handling international sales.
