VivaCell-MTS installs new 3.5G base stations in rural areas

Covering 98.8% of the populated territories of Armenia, the country’s widest 3.5G network is expanding even further.

VivaCell-MTS installed Monday, October 19, a 2.5G/3.5G base station in the village of Jrarbi in Armavir province, supplying the population with voice and data services using HSPA+ technology, with maximum speed of 42.2 Mbps at the downlink and 5.76 Mbps at the uplink.

Overall, the Company has 1106 2.5G/3.5G base stations, with 70 more scheduled to be constructed by the end of the year.

The expansion of 4G/LTE network is another priority for VivaCell-MTS. The Company is still the only telecommunications operator in Armenia providing 4G services on a commercial basis. 4G technology provides 150Mbps at the downlink and 50 Mbps at the uplink was made available in Yerevan, Gyumri, Vanadzor, Dilijan, Tsaghkadzor, Armavir and Vagharshapat. VivaCell-MTS will achieve the targeted 255 LTE sites (eNodeBs) by the end of 2015 after the deployment of 5 planned 4G/LTE base stations.

“Launching the network we aimed to make mobile communication available even to a shepherd in the highest mountain,” VivaCell-MTS General Manager Ralph Yirikian commented. “At present, no one can be surprised that VivaCell-MTS’ voice and data services are available even in the most under-populated areas of the country. We are gradually planning to have high-speed internet based on 3.5G and 4G technologies made available to people living in the most remote areas.”

With the help of 3.5G and 4G services, subscribers are able to use advanced online services, including internet surfing, online gaming, video streaming on a new level without dependence on the fixed network.
