The first trailer for Anomalisa stop motion animation has been released, The Hollywood Reporter said.

"What is it to be human?" a man asks in a voiceover in the first trailer for Charlie Kaufman's latest venture.

The director is known for his work on films like Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, where his deep-thinking characters often question their place in the universe and their relation to humanity. The primary difference between Kaufman's other protagonist and his most recent one is that Anomalisa's main character is made out of clay.

But the characters of Anomalisa are not your typical claymation creations; the film ventures deep into the uncanny valley, it's stop motion puppets looking just one degree away from real human actors.

As with Malkovich and Adaptation, Kaufman also wrote the story for his latest movie, which centers on a disenchanted motivational speaker (David Thewlis) and his romantic relationship with an enigmatic woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who he meets at a speaking engagement.

Kaufman raised over $400,000 on Kickstarter to make the movie that he co-directed with animator Duke Johnson. The film was acquired by Paramount after it screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Anomalisa is due out on Dec. 30 in a limited theatrical release.
