Hour of Code 2015 unites over 200 Armenian schoolchildren

Ayb High School hosted the Hour of Code event on Sunday, December 20, on the initiative of Ayb School and Microsoft Innovation Center Armenia (MIC Armenia) and in partnership with VivaCell-MTS and Menu.am.

The Hour of Code is an international global movement reaching more than 100 million participants from around 45 000 schools of over 180 countries. The Hour of Code gives participants an opportunity to easily learn various programming languages and approaches through games, at the same time developing problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity. The event is open to everyone interested in new technologies, games, and programming, with the knowledge of the English language being the only requirement.

This year, the Hour of Code was held for the second time in Armenia. Last year the event united more than 150 participants from different schools of Armenia, with more and more people becoming interested in the event. Over 200 participants took part in the Hour of Code 2015.

“Nowadays, programing is available to everyone,” said Aram Pakhchanian, the head of Ayb School. “The main aim of the Hour of Code is learning to think like a programmer regardless of the students’ future career. The Hour of Code 2014 showed that such initiatives bring together and inspire many children. Ayb School encourages such innovation formats. We believe that the implementation of such projects is a large investment in the education and development of future generations.”

“Today, technologies are used in every aspect of life—from phones to cars, medicine to daily life,” said MIC director Artashes Vardanyan. “That is why programming is studied as a regular subject at schools in many countries. Microsoft Innovation Center attaches great importance to this initiative, which aims to show schoolchildren how technologies they use are created."

Besides the main part, the event featured other activities including the robotics show and creation of new samples out of broken phones.

Similar to previous year, VivaCell-MTS provided high-speed Internet connection during the Hour of Code 2015 event, with Menu.am serving as the "tasty" partner of the event.

The event was also supported by UITE, PicsArt and Shadowmatic.
