Sean Penn under investigation over interview with drug kingpin El Chapo

Sean Penn is under investigation because he talked to one of the world's most wanted men for a magazine interview. The actor had a seven-hour conversation as well as follow-ups with drug kingpin Joaquin Guzman back in October when the "El Chapo" was still on the run.

As AceShowbiz reports citing Rolling Stone magazine, Mexican actress Kate del Castillo helped set up Penn's meeting with Guzman. Their exchange, taking place deep in the Mexican jungle, was followed with interviews by phone and video. Guzman allegedly told Penn in a video recording that he had tried drugs but was not addicted to it and had not taken any drugs in the last 20 years. He also told the actor that he started growing and selling marijuana at the age of 15 just to survive.

Guzman was recaptured on Friday, January 8 by Mexican authorities and sent back to Altiplano jail. He was first caught in Guatemala in 1993 and extradited to Mexico before escaping from a high-security prison in Jalisco state in 2001 through a tunnel. He told Penn in the interview that he sent engineers to Germany to learn to build the tunnel.

It's not yet clear whether Penn's interview with Guzman had anything to do with the raid. But in the article he wrote, Penn said the drug lord's truest "was not to be f***ed with". He added, "I take no pride in keeping secrets that may be perceived as protecting criminals, nor do I have any gloating arrogance at posing for selfies with unknowing security men. But I'm in my rhythm. Everything I say to everyone must be true."

del Castillo and a fixer were also under the investigation.
