"Creed" director to helm Marvel superhero flick "Black Panther"

PanARMENIAN.Net - Marvel has officially announced that "Creed" director Ryan Coogler will direct its upcoming superhero movie "Black Panther". Kevin Feige is producing the movie while Joe Robert Cole ("American Crime Story") is penning the script, according to AceShowbiz.

"We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family," said Feige in a statement. "The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct 'Black Panther'. Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we've found the perfect director to bring T'Challa's story to life."

The 29-year-old filmmaker is the first black director to helm a Marvel Studios feature film. He had been reportedly in talks for the directing gig since early December 2015. "Selma" helmer Ava DuVernay was once attached to direct, but she passed on the project in July 2015 reportedly because she and the studio "had different ideas about what the story would be."

"Black Panther" stars Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa, the prince of the fictional African nation of Wakanda who must rise to take the mantle of Black Panther after his father is killed. Boseman's Black Panther will be introduced in the upcoming "Captain America: Civil War" before appearing in his solo film, which is slated for a U.S. release on February 16, 2018.
