It took a month, but Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens has finally been knocked off the top spot at the German box office, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Leonardo DiCaprio's The Revenant, powered by 12 Oscar nominations and key wins at the Golden Globes, surged forward on its second weekend to overtake The Force Awakens with $4.6 million (€4.15 million), improving on its opening bow by 15 percent. The awards favorite has earned just under $9 million in Germany so far.

Star Wars, however, booked a still-impressive $4.1 million (€3.8 million) in its fifth outing, enough to break the $100 million barrier, making it only the third global market after North America and the U.K. where it has crossed this threshold. China, where Star Wars has earned more than $95 million to date, will be next.

The Force Awakens has become the fastest film to sell more than 8 million tickets in Germany since French hit The Intouchables in 2012. Given its current pace, The Force Awakens should finish slightly north of $110 million to $115 million in Germany, a result that would make it the third-highest grossing film of all time for the territory, behind only James Cameron's Avatar and Titanic.

Ryan Coogler's Rocky reboot Creed opened in the third spot with $1.4 million (€1.3 million) from 317 locations in Germany, beating J Blakeson's sci-fi actioner The Fifth Wave, which earned $1.2 million (€1.1 million) from 459 screens in its first weekend. Local sleeper hit, Ich bin dann mal weg, completed the top five, earning $1.0 million (€930,000) in its fourth weekend for Warner Bros. Germany. The local-language comedy, based on a best-selling travel book, has earned around $11 million in theatrical release so far.

In total, there were around 1.8 million admissions over the weekend in Germany, accounting for a $17.4 million (€16 million) gross.
