Netflix hits the milestone of 75 million subscribersJanuary 20, 2016 - 16:08 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Netflix had reason to celebrate on New Year's Day as the streaming service hit the milestone of 75 million subscribers on January 1, Digital Spy reports. That's according to the company's fourth-quarter financial results, which confirm that almost six million people took out memberships during the period in question. The global user figures beat Wall Street's estimates of 5.12 million additional subscribers for the quarter, although Netflix missed its domestic target of 1.62 million new US customers by around 60,000. The figures also suggest that binge-watching is on the rise as 42.5 billion hours of content was streamed in 2015, a massive increase on the 29 billion hours of the previous year - that's a lot of House of Cards episodes. Netflix's revenue for the quarter topped out at $1.67 billion, lower than the forecasted $1.83 billion, but enough to see shares in the company rise by 9% in the wake of the earnings call. "We are thrilled to be available worldwide... What fun we are having making our service popular in Thailand, Poland, Australia, Chile, France and over 180 other countries," said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in a statement. Going forward, Netflix has pledged to spend more money breaking into new territories following its aggressive expansion during the last quarter.
