“The Fast and the Furious” helmer directing “Category 5” disaster thrillerJanuary 21, 2016 - 17:20 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - “The Fast and the Furious” helmer Rob Cohen will direct the disaster action thriller “Category 5”, Variety said. “Category 5” follows a team of tech hackers who infiltrate a U.S. Mint facility on a small coastal town to steal $102 million just as a disastrous Category 5 hurricane is about to strike and level it to the ground. The only other two people left in the town, a meteorologist and a treasury agent, must survive the storm while stopping the thieves from getting away with the heist of the century. Casting is currently underway, and production is slated for the spring and summer. Foresight Unlimited will handle foreign sales and introduce the film to buyers at the Berlin Film Festival next month. Producers are Karen Baldwin, Michael Tadross Jr. and Danny Roth. Howard Baldwin, Mark Damon, Bill Immerman and Tamara Birkemoe will executive produce. “Crossing a heist movie set amidst the intense action of a natural disaster was an idea to which I truly responded,” Cohen said. “It’s a chance for me to get back to my roots in doing the adrenaline-pumped action/special effects films I love to create.” Cohen’s credits include “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” “xXx” “Alex Cross” and “The Boy Next Door,” starring Jennifer Lopez. He’s attached to direct “The Adventures of Marco Polo” for Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman at Paramount Pictures. Cohen is represented by WME and Craig Baumgarten of Link Management, and Michael Schenkman — attorney at Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal.
