Windows Phone sales drop to almost non-existenceFebruary 19, 2016 - 20:49 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Gartner has revealed its smartphone market share stats for the final quarter of 2015, and Windows Phone fans might want to look away now, Digital Spy said. Sales of devices running the Microsoft operating system have almost ground to a halt, with the platform now accounting for just 1.1% of the market. Windows Phone has always lagged behind iOS and Android, but in the final quarter of 2014, the OS held 2.8% of the market and was selling 10 million units. That figure has nose-dived to 4.4 million in the fourth quarter of last year, leaving iOS and Android with a 98% share between them. However, it wasn't the best quarter for the big two either, with the figures suggesting that iPhone sales fell for the first time, causing Apple's market share to dip from 20.4% to 17.7% year-on-year. The world's biggest smartphone shipper Samsung saw modest gains during the quarter, although its market share fell to 22.5% from 24.7% the year before. Huawei saw the biggest gains, emerging in third place behind Samsung and Apple with an 8% share, up from 5.7% in the fourth quarter of 2014. Going forward, Microsoft's handset hopes appear to rest on the rumoured Surface Phone, which is expected to replace the Lumia range as its flagship brand later this year. Apple, meanwhile, seems to be pinning its short-term ambitions on the lower end of the market with the budget-friendly iPhone 5SE, tipped for release next month.
