Oscars 2016: Alejandro G. Inarritu is best director

PanARMENIAN.Net - Sam Smith has won his first Academy Award. The British singer took home Best Original Song for creating the music and lyrics of "Spectre" theme song "Writing's on the Wall", sharing the prize with co-writer Jimmy Napes, AceShowbiz reports.

"I actually can't breathe right now," Smith said when accepting the prize. He gave a shout out to fellow nominee Lady GaGa, exclaiming, "You're incredible." He also dedicated his win to LGBT community, "I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community around the world ... We can all stand together as winners."

Smith becomes the first openly gay man to win an Academy Award. He took the stage earlier that night to perform "Writing's on the Wall".

Alejandro G. Inarritu was the next winner taking the stage that night. He accepted the trophy for Best Director for his work on "The Revenant". He edged out Adam McKay ("The Big Short"), George Miller ("Mad Max: Fury Road"), Lenny Abrahamson ("Room") and Tom McCarthy ("Spotlight") for the honor.

"I can't believe this is happening," he said. "It's amazing to receive this award tonight but it's much more beautiful for me to share it with the talented cast and crew members," he said, before praising the movie's star Leonardo DiCaprio, "Leo, you are The Revenant."
