Richard Gere, Laura Linney’s “The Dinner” sells to multiple territories

PanARMENIAN.Net - Protagonist Pictures has closed multiple territory deals on Oren Moverman’s “The Dinner”, which stars Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan and Rebecca Hall, Variety reports.

The film has been licensed to Videa (Italy), Dea Planeta (Spain), Phantom Film (Japan), Green Narae (Korea), California Filmes (Latin America), Tanweer (Greece and Turkey), Front Row Entertainment (Middle East), Lev Film (Israel), Freeman Distribution, Monolith and Blitz Film & Video Distribution (Central and Eastern Europe), Penny Black Media (airlines), and a “top-notch distributor” for Germany and Switzerland. Other deals are pending. The film, which is adapted from Herman Koch’s novel by Moverman, is in post-production.

Protagonist also announced sales on several other titles following last month’s European Film Market in Berlin.

Ben Wheatley’s action thriller “Free Fire,” starring Oscar winner Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy and Sharlto Copley, was sold to Metropolitan Filmexport in France, Volga Film for CIS and Baltics, Front Row Entertainment for the Middle East, Queen for Indonesia, and to Japan in a deal closing imminently. The film had been widely pre-sold at previous markets, including a multi-territory deal to Sony Worldwide, and only a handful of territories remain available.

Whit Stillman’s critically adored period comedy “Love & Friendship” sold in further territories — to Academy 2 for Italy, KSM for Germany, Forum Films for Poland, and deals are currently being finalized for Spain and China; and, in a deal brokered by Cinetic Media, Mongrel Media for Canada. The film opens in the U.S. through Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions on May 13 and in the U.K. through Curzon Artificial Eye on May 27.

Previously unannounced sales include Transmission for Australia and New Zealand, NonStop Entertainment for Scandinavia, Frenetic Films for Switzerland, Zon Lusomundo for Portugal, Forum Films for Israel, Karantanija for Former Yugoslavia, Movieturk for Turkey, Sookie Pictures for Korea, Proview Entertainment for Taiwan, Fox for Asia PTV, California Filmes for Latin America and Jaguar Distribution for Airlines. France will open with Sophie Dulac Distribution and Benelux with Cineart – both producer deals.

British filmmaker Andrea Arnold is in post-production on her first U.S. movie “American Honey,” which has sold in France to Diaphana Distribution, in Latin America to Sun Distribution, in Benelux to Cineart, in South Korea to T Cast, Israel to Lev, Middle East to Front Row Entertainment, Turkey to Kurmaca and former Yugoslavia to MCF. The sale to A24 for the U.S. was announced some time ago.

Psychological thriller “The Ones Below” from writer/director David Farr, which screened in Berlin Panorama, sold to Impacto Cine for Latin America, Lev for Israel and Penny Black Media for airlines. Sales to Italy and Canada are in negotiation. These are in addition to previously unannounced deals in France (Septieme Factory/Seven Sept), Spain (Corbi Media), Portugal (Zon Lusomundo), Turkey (Mars Production), Middle East (Front Row Entertainment), China (DDDream), South Korea (Sidus), and Asia PTV (Fox). Icon will open the film in the U.K. on March 11 and Magnolia will open in the U.S. on May 27.

The Michael Fassbender/Brendan Gleeson starrer “Trespass Against Us,” from director Adam Smith and writer/producer Alistair Siddons, sold in Italy to Videa and to Green Narae in Korea, in addition to earlier sales to the U.S. (A24), U.K. (Lionsgate), Canada (Elevation Pictures), Australia (Umbrella Entertainment), France (The Jokers/Le Pacte), Spain (Corbi Media), Portugal (Zon Lusomundo), Greece (Feelgood Entertainment), Middle East (Front Row Entertainment), Turkey (Mediavyzion), former Yugoslavia (MCF), China (DDDream), Hong Kong (Golden Scene), Indonesia (PT Amero), Asia PTV (Fox), airlines (Cinesky), and a slew of further territories in a studio deal.

Protagonist is concluding further deals on Sundance hit “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” which will be announced shortly.

Also in Berlin were actors Julianne Moore and Greta Gerwig, director Rebecca Miller and producer Damon Cardasis for the international premiere of “Maggie’s Plan,” which sold out for Protagonist last year and which will start its European release rollout in April.

“The independent market felt reinvigorated at Berlin and we had a very enthusiastic response to our films,” said Protagonist CEO Mike Goodridge. “We have been striving to work with the most original and assured filmmakers and I feel that at Sundance and Berlin, we offered the fruits of those efforts to the marketplace. Our head of sales Vanessa Saal and her team were incredibly busy as a result.”
