Elisabeth Moss, Gwendoline Christie confirmed for “Top of Lake” Season 2

Elisabeth Moss is returning for a second season of “Top of the Lake” for SundanceTV and BBC Two. The “Mad Men” alum will be joined in Season 2 by new cast member Gwendoline Christie of “Game of Thrones” and “Star War: The Force Awakens”, Variety reports.

Jane Campion will return to direct Season 2 of the crime mystery drama, joined by co-director Ariel Kleiman. Campion is co-writing the new season with Gerard Lee.

“I’m so excited to be back in Australia working with Jane on exploring this wonderful character. I can’t wait for audiences to see where we take Robin’s journey!” Moss said in a statement. Moss won a Golden Globe in 2014 for actress in a television movie or miniseries for her performance in the series’ first season, in which she played a police detective investigating the disappearance of a 12-year-old girl. The new season will find Moss’ character investigating a new murder four years after the events of the original.

“I am so delighted to be working on ‘Top of the Lake’ 2,” Christie said. “Jane Campion has been a major creative influence throughout my life and I could not feel more privileged to be working on the next installment of her unique and enthralling drama, alongside the brilliant Elisabeth Moss.”

Season 2 will premiere first on BBC Two in the U.K. in 2017, then later in the year in the U.S. on SundanceTV. Episodes in the U.S. will be featured on Hulu the day after they premiere on SundanceTV. David Dencik (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) and Alice Englert (“Beautiful Creatures”) will also join the cast.

The series is produced by See-Saw Films for BBC Two. It is co-produced with SundanceTV in the U.S., BBC First and Foxtel in Australia, and in association with Hulu in the U.S., ARTE in France and BBC Worldwide. Campion serves as executive producer with See-Saw’s Emile Sherman, Iain Canning and Jamie Laurenson, alongside Lucy Richer for the BBC. Philippa Campbell and Libby Sharpe will produce.
