Saban Films has acquired U.S. rights to Cell, a sci-fi thriller based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.

John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson star in the apocalyptic film from director Tod "Kip" Williams, which follows a struggling graphic artist (Cusack) who bands together with a small group of people to trek across New England to reunite with his son after a mysterious cellphone signal is broadcast across the network and turns the population into mindless animals.

“Stephen King is widely recognized as a master of the horror genre. Combining his talent along with Tod’s vision and this dynamic cast, which reteams King, John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson for the first time since 1408, delivers a truly unique modern tale of survival,” said Saban Films president Bill Bromiley.

“I enjoyed working on Cell and love the way it turned out,” said King. “Kip Williams has made a scary and thoroughly entertaining movie. But you may want to put your cellphone in the freezer after seeing it.”

CAA and the International Film Trust negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.

Saban Films' upcoming slate incudes A Hologram for the King starring Tom Hanks, Alex and Ben Brewer’s The Trust starring Nicolas Cage and Elijah Wood, I Am Wrath with John Travolta, and USS Indianapolis, also starring Cage.
