Cannes Classics unveils 2016 lineup

PanARMENIAN.Net - Frederick Wiseman and Raymond Depardo will be honored, while “The French Connection” and “The Exorcist” director William Friedkin will give the annual Cinema Masterclass at the Cannes Film Festival, Variety reports.

Cannes Classics, the sidebar dedicated to restored heritage films, unveiled on Wednesday, April 20 its 2016 lineup, which includes the world premiere preview of Bertrand Tavernier’s documentary about French cinema, “Voyage à travers le cinéma français.”

The program will screen Depardo’s “Faits Divers” (1983) and Wiseman’s “Hospital” (1969), as well as Friedkin’s “Sorcerer” (1977) following his masterclass — hosted by film critic Michel Ciment on May 18.

Pietro Germi’s “Signore & signori” and Claude Lelouch’s “Un Homme et une femme,” which both won the Palme d’or in 1966 (that year’s jury was presided over by Sophia Loren), as well as Georges Rouquier’s “Farrebique” will also play the fest.

Cannes Classics will premiere new restorations of Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Solaris” and Jean-Luc Godard’s “Masculin féminin” as well as films from Kenji Mizoguchi, Marlon Brando, Jacques Becker and Mario Bava.

Most of the pics will be released in theaters and on DVD/Blu-ray. The Cannes Classics program will be screened at Paris’ Les Fauvettes theater, the festival Cinema Rittrovato in Bologna and the Institut Lumière in Lyon.
