“Embrace of the Serpent,” “Ixcanul” lead Platino Award noms

PanARMENIAN.Net - Colombia's Oscar-nominated Embrace of the Serpent (El Abrazo de la Serpiente) and Guatemala's acclaimed drama Ixcanul have each garnered eight Platino Award nominations, including best picture, it was announced Thursday, May 31, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Both films have made history in their respective countries. Ciro Guerra's Amazon jungle-set drama Embrace last year became the first Colombian picture to ever land an Academy Award nomination.

Jayro Bustamante's Ixcanul, winner of the Berlin International Film Festival's Alfred Bauer Award last year, was Guatemala's first-ever Oscar submission in the foreign-language category.

Embrace and Ixcanul will vie for best picture honors against Pablo Trapero's El Clan, from Argentina; Pablo Larrain's El Club, from Chile; and Cesc Gay's Truman, from Spain.

El Club, El Clan and Truman grabbed six Platino noms each.

The Platinos were launched in 2014 as a platform to promote movies hailing from Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal.

The awards ceremony will air July 24 live from Uruguay on TNT Latin America.
