BBC Worldwide North America nabs Tom Hardy’s “London Road”

PanARMENIAN.Net - BBC Worldwide North America has acquired U.S. rights to the musical thriller “London Road”, starring Tom Hardy, Olivia Colman and Anita Dobson, Variety reports.

The film, directed by Rufus Norris and written by Adam Cork and Alecky Blythe, is based on the National Theatre musical of the same name about the 2006 Steven Wright killings in Ipswich. “London Road,” which screened in the City to City section of last year’s Toronto Film Festival, will hit theaters in September.

The movie also features the play’s original cast members, including Clare Burt, Rosalie Craig, James Doherty, Kate Fleetwood, Hal Fowler, Linzi Hateley, Nick Holder, Claire Moore, Michael Shaeffer, Nicola Sloane, Paul Thornley, Howard Ward and Duncan Wisbey.

The pic follows the residents of London Road, who struggle for years with frequent soliciting and curb-crawling on their street. When a local resident is convicted of a string of murders, the community grapples with what it means to be at the epicenter of this tragedy.

The stage production of “London Road” received strong reviews when it premiered at the National Theatre in 2011. It returned to the stage in 2012 for a sold-out run.

“‘London Road’ offers a rare lyrical interpretation of true events with a fantastic ensemble cast including Tom Hardy and Olivia Colman,” said Soumya Sriraman, BBC Worldwide North America’s exec VP of franchise and digital enterprises. “While the film deals with a difficult subject, it also illustrates the resilience of a community coming together under extraordinary circumstances.”

The movie was produced by Dixie Linder (“Broken”) and was executive produced by Nick Marston for Cuba Pictures, David Sabel for National Theatre, Tally Garner, Christine Langan, Joe Oppenheimer, Beth Pattinson, Ben Roberts, Norman Merry, and Peter Hampden. It’s presented by BBC Films, BFI, and National Theatre in association with LipSync and supported by Arts Council England.

The deal was negotiated between Sriraman and Vanessa Saal, head of sales at Protagonist Pictures, on behalf of Cuba Pictures and National Theatre.
