Jeff Daniels, Merritt Wever to topline “Goddess” Netflix Western series

Jeff Daniels and Merritt Wever are heading West for Netflix. The Emmy-winning duo have been tapped to star in the streaming giant's limited Western series Godless, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The project, from Steven Soderbergh and Scott Frank, is set in 1884 and centers on Frank Griffin (Daniels), a menacing outlaw who is terrorizing the West as he hunts down Roy Goode (Unbroken's Jack O'Connell), his son-like partner turned mortal enemy. While Roy hides at Alice Fletcher's ranch, Frank's chase leads him to the quiet town of La Belle, N.M. — which is mysteriously made up of entirely women.

Wever, fresh off AMC's The Walking Dead, will play Mary Agnes, the brash widow of the late mayor of Le Belle, a town where all of the men have died in a mining accident.

Additionally, Jeremy Bobb (The Knick) will reunite with Soderberg and play A.T. Grigg, the editor of the Santa Fe Dailey Review, who has been obsessed for years with writing about the Griffin Gang. Thomas Brodie-Sangster (The Maze Runner, Game of Thrones) will portray Whitey Winn, the town deputy. Devoted to both books and the sheriff and afraid of no one, but still a boy more than a man, he has a lot to learn.

Daniels, who won an Emmy for HBO's The Newsroom, can currently be seen in his Tony-nominated role on Broadway in Blackbird. He is repped by ICM Partners Martino management.

Wever, who won an Emmy for her role on Showtime's Nurse Jackie, also counts The Good Wife, The Wire and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip among her credits. She is repped by Innovative Artists and Viking Entertainment

Frank will write, direct and executive produce Godless alongside Soderbergh and Casey Silver.

Bobb (The Wolf of Wall Street) is repped by Gersh and Suskin Management; Brodie-Sangster is with WME and Magnolia Entertainment.
