Instagram following Snapchat's lead with new slideshow feature

PanARMENIAN.Net - Since Snapchat's rise to prominence several years ago, the envy from Facebook has been real.

Even though the social network failed in a bid to buy the temporary photo-sharing app, that hasn't stopped it mirroring several of its features. First was the failed Slingshot standalone app, before filters appeared in Facebook Live, and a 'Quick Updates' test within the mobile app.

This time, Facebook-owned multimedia app Instagram is looking to take a slice of the pie, rolling out a feature which essentially copies Snapchat's Stories, Digital Spy said.

Showing no creativity/shame in its branding, 'Instagram Stories' will allow users to create slideshows separate from their main feed, which disappear after 24 hours, Digital Spy said.

Also like Snapchat, you can add illustrations to your snaps, add text and emoji, and check who has viewed your Story.

The new feature will see Stories live at the top of your feed, using an algorithm based on relationships to order the temporary slideshow. So, if you're consistently giving your pal Instagram support, it's almost certain their Story will appear first in the queue.

However, unlike Snapchat, Stories can also easily be hidden from anyone you don't want to see them, even if they follow you.

Aside from the obvious reasons behind the move, Instagram noted in a blog post that it hopes the new feature will increase engagement and motivate users to post more often.

"With Instagram Stories, you don't have to worry about over-posting. Instead, you can share as much as you want throughout the day - with as much creativity as you want", the post reads.

"Instagram has always been a place to share the moments you want to remember. Now you can share your highlights and everything in between, too."
