Netflix acquires Adam Leon’s romantic comedy “Tramps”September 19, 2016 - 22:08 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - Netflix has acquired worldwide rights for “Tramps” following its debut at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Variety has confirmed. It’s been a busy few weeks for the streaming giant, which picked up “Barry,” a look at the early days of President Barack Obama, and “What Happened to Monday?,” a sci-fi thriller with Noomi Rapace, out of the festival. There were other studios circling “Tramps,” including A24 and The Orchard, although there were concerns that without big stars, its commercial prospects would be diminished. “Tramps” is the sophomore feature of Adam Leon, the writer and director who first attracted attention with 2012’s “Gimme the Loot.” It follows a bagman, who picks up the wrong briefcase in a drop gone wrong, and later falls in love with the driver. In a largely positive review, IndieWire’s Eric Kohn wrote that while the film doesn’t “break new ground,” it ranks as “one of the better American romcoms in recent memory.” The festival market was slow-going in its initial days, but picked up steam as Toronto came to a close. Among the bigger deals, “Jackie,” a historical drama about Jacqueline Kennedy, sold to Fox Searchlight, and “Their Finest,” a World War II comedy, was picked up by EuropaCorp. UTA Independent Film Group handled the deal. The Hollywood Reporter broke news of the sale.
