Hauser & Wirth plans Arshile Gorky shows in New York, Los AngelesOctober 5, 2016 - 12:08 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The highly regarded international art gallery Hauser & Wirth announced that it now represents the estate of Armenian-born American modernist painter Arshile Gorky, ArtNews reports. Gorky’s estate had previously been represented by Gagosian Gallery. Hauser & Wirth is already planning its first Gorky show. The exhibition will be curated by Paul Schimmel, and after debuting in New York in 2017, it will travel to Hauser Wirth & Schimmel in Los Angeles and will be accompanied by a comprehensive publication focused on Gorky’s expansive oeuvre. The artist’s position as a pivotal post-war figure is currently highlighted by a selection of key works on view in the major exhibition ‘Abstract Expressionism’ at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, England, until January 2, Artlyst says. Gorky, born Vostanik Manoug Adoian, emigrated from the Ottoman Enpire to the United States in 1920, fleeing the Armenian Genocide. In an attempt to assimilate with the new culture in which he found himself, Gorky changed his name and consciously assumed the persona of an avant-garde artist. Gorky’s work is represented in museum and private collections worldwide, including Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Musée national d’art moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tate, London, England among others. Top stories The creative crew of the Public TV had chosen 13-year-old Malena as a participant of this year's contest.
