Michael Pena joins Chris Hemsworth in “Horse Soldiers”

Michael Pena has joined Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon in the Afghanistan War drama “Horse Soldiers” for Black Label Media and Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Variety reports.

Lionsgate is handling foreign sales on the project at the American Film Market. Nicolai Fuglsig is directing the film from a script by Peter Craig and Ted Tally.

Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill, and Thad Luckinbill are producing with Jerry Bruckheimer through his Jerry Bruckheimer Films banner in Bruckheimer’s first venture into the independent sector. Chad Oman is exec producing.

“Horse Soldiers” is based on Doug Stanton’s book about a U.S. Special Forces team and their captain after they are dispatched to a mountainous region of Afghanistan in the weeks immediately following 9/11.

Pena will play a member of the group on an attempt to cut off the Taliban’s supply line.

Pena will be seen in “Collateral Beauty” and with Dax Shepard in the comedy “CHiPs.” He signed in August to star in Sony’s thriller “The Bringing,” but the studio decided last week to bail out on the project.

The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.
