New “The Mummy” pic teases Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe's encounter

PanARMENIAN.Net - Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe are featured in the newest photo of "The Mummy". Released via Entertainment Weekly, the picture hints that their characters, Nick Morton and Dr. Henry Jekyll respectively, won't get along well as they look tense in the image, AceShowbiz said.

In "The Mummy" reboot, Cruise plays an unreliable guy who is cursed after encountering a queen mummy (portrayed by Sofia Boutella). Meanwhile, Crowe plays Dr. Jekyll and his evil alter-ego Mr. Hyde, the characters originally created by Robert Louis Stevenson for his book "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". In the movie, Dr. Jekyll will introduce Morton to Prodigium, a secret organization aimed to hunt monsters, but the role of Mr. Hyde in the story hasn't been revealed yet.

While viewers might assume that Cruise will save the world as usual, director Alex Kurtzman said that Cruise wouldn't have that usual trait. "One of the things that I think has defined Tom Cruise movies, for 30 years, is that Tom Cruise always saves the day. You know whenever you're in a Tom Cruise movie that he's gonna figure out a way to save the day," said Kurtzman. "And that's great, and it's why I pay my money to see his movies. However, in the context of a monster movie, it's challenging, because monster movies are about characters who are often very out of control, and don't know how to save the day. The first thing I said to Tom was, 'It'll be scarier if we can take away the fundamental knowledge that you're gonna solve the problem.' "

"The Mummy" marks the first installment of Universal Monster Cinematic Universe. Just like the original "The Mummy" franchise, this reboot will focus on a mummy that threatens the world and how to stop its wrath.

The movie will hit theaters on June 9, 2017. Starring alongside Cruise, Crowe and Boutella are Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance.
