Pace Paris presents works by iconic photographers

PanARMENIAN.Net - Pace Paris and Pace/MacGill are presenting a new selection of iconic works by photographers who have changed the history of photography and portraiture including Richard Avedon, Paul Graham, Richard Learoyd, and Irving Penn at Pace Paris 10 Avenue de Messine, Art Daily reports.

Although Richard Avedon first earned his reputation as a fashion photographer, perhaps his greater achievement was the reinvention of the genre of photographic portraiture. The concept of “performance”, in both life and art, was one of his central concerns. He photographed actors and comedians, pop stars and divas, musicians and dancers, artists in all media whose public lives were essentially performances. Avedon’s portraits were the subject of a major retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2002, and his work appears in every major museum photography collection.

Paul Graham is a British photographer living and working in New York City. In 1981, Graham completed his first acclaimed work, The Great North Road. His use of color film in the early 1980s, at a time when British photography was dominated by traditional black-and-white social documentary, had a revolutionizing effect on the genre. He has been the subject of more than eighty solo exhibitions worldwide.

Richard Learoyd studied photography under the landscape photographer Thomas Joshua Cooper at the Glasgow School of Art. He is known for his large-scale portrait, landscape and still-life photographs produced using a camera obscura. Learoyd’s photographs were the subject of the solo exhibition Richard Learoyd: Dark Mirror at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2015–16) and are on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, until 27 November 2016. His work is in the permanent collections of institutions worldwide.

Widely recognized as one of the most prolific and respected photographers of the 20th century, Irving Penn worked on assignment for The New Yorker, Vogue, and Vanity Fair, and shot advertising campaigns for Clinique and De Beers, among others. His work for Paris couture collections revised the aesthetics of fashion photography. His work can be found in museum collections worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago; Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
