ABSENCE OF 62-ND RUSSIAN MILITARY BASE SHOULD NOT TELL ON SOCIAL CONDITIONS OF AKHALKALAKI POPULATION, GEORGIAN DEFENSE MINISTER STATED
The absence of the 62-nd Russian military base should not tell on the social conditions of the population of Akhalkalaki city, mostly inhabited by Armenians. Georgian defense minister David Tevzadze stated it upon his arrival in Yerevan today, when being asked about the consequences of the Russian military base withdrawal from the territory of Samtskhe-Javakhetia region of Georgia. The minister reported that with that purpose the Georgian authorities were working out complex measures on social development of the region. He emphasized that "the question of elimination of the Russian base from the Georgian territory is practically solved and it is only a matter of time." Let us remind that September 12 a meeting of protest was held in Akhalkalaki against withdrawal of the Russian military base from the territory of Samtskhe-Javakhetia region of Georgia. The meeting participants expressed anxiety that the withdrawal of the Russian base from Akhalkalaki territory will not only exacerbate the grave social and economic situation in Javakhetia, but will also deprive the population of its main security guarantee. They noted that the Georgian party was not able to safeguard the Armenians of Javakhetia against possible invasion by Turkey.
