Kosovo's secession of from Serbia should be reconsidered, Russia's Foreign Minister said.

"The territory of Kosovo was detached from Serbia unilaterally, what conflicts with international norms," Sergei Lavrov told journalists in Yekaterinburg. "The Serbian election was a manifestation of developing democracy and equality of rights in domestic and foreign policy," he said, RBC reports.

Proclaimed on February 17, 2008, the independence of Kosovo was recognized by 40 countries, including the U.S., France, UK and Germany.

Enlisting Russia's support, Serbia called in the international community to annul the Kosovo independence declaration.

Presently, a 16-thousand strong NATO force is deployed in the breakaway province.
