EUROPEAN UNION STATEMENT ON NON-RECOGNITION OF NAGORNO-KARABAKH PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS INCOMPATIBLE WITH EUROPEAN DEMOCRATIC VALUES
The Armenian MFA has expressed concerns regarding the statement of the European Union regarding the coming 11 August presidential elections in Nagorno-Karabakh considering it incompatible with the democratic values fostered by this international organization. As it is known, August 2 the EU member-states stated about their non-recognition of the legitimacy of the presidential election in Nagorno-Karabakh noting they support the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and do not recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenian MFA reminded that such statements were made regarding any elections in Nagorno-Karabakh in 1994 and in essence they are not unexpected. But Armenian foreign ministry is concerned with that these statements are made without approval of the OSCE Minsk group co-chairs hampering the attempts of the latter made for the final settlement of the conflict. Nevertheless, RA MFA positively evaluates the fact, these statements of the EU emphasize the importance of the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the election in Nagorno-Karabakh will not have negative impact on the peaceful settlement of the conflict. There is no alternative but to organize the public life through elections and the Nagorno-Karabakh population is absolutely competent, without any positive or negative evaluations from the outside, to make this step, important for the people's public life and finally important for the carrying of the negotiation process to its logical conclusion, the RA MFA statement notes. Armenian, regardless of that and any other statements of that kind, welcomes the people of the Nagorno-Karabakh with strong will to conducting the election and to building the democratic society with this step, the report notes.
