Prosecutors demand jail terms, life sentence for Sasna Tsrer members

PanARMENIAN.Net - Prosecutors on Wednesday, August 12 demanded a life sentence for a member of an armed group that seized a Yerevan police station in July 2016.

The group known as Sasna Tsrer (named after the Armenian epic "Daredevils of Sassoun") stormed a police patrol department in summer of 2016 and took everyone inside hostage.

Throughout the following days, the group released the captives one by one. After negotiations that lasted a little over two weeks, the gunmen agreed to surrender to law enforcement bodies. Three police officers were killed during this period.

While most members of the 30-strong group have not been charged, Smbat Barseghyan is facing life sentence while eight others could be handed 8.5-21 years imprisonment.

Charges against a deceased member, Arayik Khandoyan, were dropped.
