France says many questions remain about new Karabakh deal

PanARMENIAN.Net - French ambassador to Armenia Jonathan Lacôte has said there are many questions over a statement signed by Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan to end the war in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh).

Lacôte on Thursday, November 11 met residents of the city of Hadrut, Karabakh, who have been displaced due to the war unleashed by Azerbaijan and its ultimate capture of the settlement.

The residents are demanding the return of their city and are expecting France to support them in their struggle.

The ambassador met the protesters outside the building of the Embassy in Yerevan and said France is aware that Hadrut was one of the communities most hardly hit by war.

Lacôte said they have many questions concerning the agreement because Paris has not signed the document, adding that France's priority is to provide assistance to the people affected by war.

According to him, French President Emmanuel Macron will be meeting the representatives of the Armenian community on Thursday, November 12. He reminded that the French presidency has stressed that any lasting agreement needed to take into consideration the interests of Armenia.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev have signed a deal to end the war in Karabakh after 44 days. Karabakh (Artsakh) President Arayik Harutyunyan said on Tuesday that he has agreed to the deal signed by Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan.
