Sefilyan: Armenia faces early parliamentary election
Main domestic events of the day.

The Armenian parliament held a hearing on introduction of amendments into the RA Penal Code initiated by members of Republican Party of Armenia, Prosperous Armenia party, Orinats Yerkir party and ARF Dashnaktsutyun to bring the Code in line with European standards.

Heritage opposition party subjected the initiative to harsh criticism.

Coordinator of grassroots initiative "In defense of liberated territories" Zhirair Sefilyan said Armenia is facing an early parliamentary election late spring or early summer. He called on the opposition to boycott the elections, which "aims to weaken the public movement.

First Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan and Armenian National Congress coordinator Levon Zurabyan met with EU Envoy for the South Caucasus, Mr. Peter Semneby. Poland's Ambassador to Armenia Tomasz Knothe, head of the European Commission Delegation to Armenia Raul de Luzenberger and EU Yerevan Office Advisor on Political Issues Andrey Didenko also attended the meeting. The parties discussed possibilities to overcome the domestic crisis. The ANC announced willingness to open dialogue with the government if all political prisoners are released.

Bill on introduction of amendments in the law "On excise tax" approved Tuesday by the Armenian National Assembly was the topic of today's briefing of RPA member Vardan Aivazyan and Heritage party member Armen Martirosyan.

According to Aivazyan, the motion will help creation of more favorable conditions for Armenian manufacturers.

The bill envisages increase of excise tax on foreign spirits import.
