Russia: Karabakh status requires more negotiations

PanARMENIAN.Net - Moscow is counting on international efforts to determine the status of Nagorno-Karabakh, the chairwoman of Russia's Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko said Thursday, December 24, TASS reports.

"The status of Nagorno-Karabakh requires additional negotiations. We certainly count on the efforts of the OSCE, the President of France, the President of the United States and other countries involved in the Karabakh settlement process," Matviyenko said.

The lawmaker said there is a lot of work to be done, but said "the main thing – the implementation of international documents stipulating for the return to Azerbaijan of those territories that belong to them – has been achieved: "This just indicates that Russia has played a key role."

According to her, the Russian side did not allow further escalation of the conflict and new casualties.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev on November 9 signed a statement to end the war in Karabakh after almost 45 days. Under the deal, the Armenian side has returned all the seven regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, having lost a part of Karabakh itself in hostilities.
