Armenian, Russian scientists develop "smart vision" for drones, satellites

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian scientists and their Russian colleagues have developed a "smart vision" for satellites and drones, RIA Novosti reports. The new autonomous and inexpensive technology was created by researchers from Samara University and their colleagues from the Russian-Armenian University of Yerevan.

The software, according to the scientists, will greatly simplify the mass introduction of hyperspectral imaging technologies. The goal of hyperspectral imaging is to obtain the spectrum for each pixel in the image of a scene, with the purpose of finding objects, identifying materials, or detecting processes.

"Our solution will enable creating mobile hyperspectrometers that will recognize objects literally on the fly," head researcher Alexander Kupriyanov has said.

"We are planning to release a prototype of a universal computer system in 2022, which adapts to any image analysis task by automatically selecting special informative features. Such a system will significantly boost the efficiency of solving many problems in the analysis of digital images, including in the field of geoinformatics, "smart" agriculture, remote sensing of the Earth and even medical diagnostics."

The project was implemented with a grant from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Science Committee of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia.
