Armenian Olympian involved in fatal road accident in Yerevan

PanARMENIAN.Net - World record holder and Olympic vice-champion in weightlifting Simon Martirosyan was part of a fatal road accident near the center of Yerevan, Armenia on Monday, April 12 evening.

Martirosyan, who was driving a Mercedes CL Class 550, hit a man crossing the street in the wrong place, Shamshyan.com reports.

The driver did not flee the scene, but called an ambulance instead and helped the paramedics to transport the victim to a medical facility. The man, however, died on the way to the hospital.

The police who arrived at the scene determined that Martirosyan was sober. A criminal case has been opened.

Martirosyan returned from Moscow on Monday, after competing in the 2021 European Weightlifting Championships and winning a small gold medal. He is an Olympian, two time World Champion, and two time European Champion.
