Lithuanian MPs urge Azerbaijan to pull back forces from Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net - Lithuania's Seimas Group for Inter-Parliamentary Relations with Armenia expects Azerbaijan to pull back its forces from the sovereign territories of Armenia.

On the morning of May 12, the armed forces of Azerbaijan violated the border of Armenia in the southern province of Syunik, advancing 3.5 kilometers and surrounding Sev Lake, which is situated on the border between the two countries but is predominantly a part of Armenia. On May 13, the Azerbaijani military committed more border violations against Armenia, advancing near Vardenis (Gegharkunik province) and Sisian (Syunik province).

In a statement adopted on Thursday, May 20, lawmakers expressed concern about reports of rising tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with reports of an incursion into the Armenian territory.

The statement notes that Lithuania is closely monitoring the situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The Members of the Seimas also urged all parties to respect the ceasefire agreement achieved on November 10 fully and to continue to negotiate a permanent and peaceful settlement. The call is issued for stopping all action that would undermine the ceasefire and escalate tensions.

So far, the Foreign Ministries of France, Canada, the United States, Iran, India and Greece have expressed support for Armenia’s territorial integrity and called for Azerbaijan to withdraw from Armenia.
