Azerbaijanis shelled Armenian posts for 30 minutes, Ombudsman says

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Azerbaijani military used various caliber weapons to shell the Armenian army positions in the province of Gegharkunik on July 5, which lasted about 30 minutes, Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan said in a statement on Tuesday, July 7.

The Ombudsman's office found out that the shots were fired from positions located on the sovereign territory of Armenia. According to Tatoyan, these areas are the pastures of the Vardenis community, where people also live with their families, including children, and engage in cattle breeding and agriculture.

“Because of the shelling by the Azerbaijanis, civilians either cannot use the said territories at all, or their use is very limited. In addition, residents of communities have rights to these territories, which is legally established by the authorities of Armenia," Tatoyan said.

He reminded that the Azerbaijani servicemen in Gegharkunik and Syunik province are periodically opening fire, stealing cattle, creating barriers to haymaking, etc.

The Human Rights Defender has on multiple occasions raised the importance of creating a security zone in the two provinces to protect civilians living in border communities.

Azerbaijani forces violated Armenia’s border in several sections in the provinces of Syunik and Gegharkunik on May 12 and 13 and are still refusing to withdraw their troops from the area. One Armenian serviceman was killed in Azerbaijan’s shooting on May 25, six troops were captured on May 27, although four of them have already returned home.
