UK says supports long-term peace efforts in South Caucasus

PanARMENIAN.Net - The United Kingdom supports long-term peace and stability initiatives in the South Caucasus region and will continue to work for that goal, British ambassador to Armenia John Gallagher said at a meeting with Defense Minister Arshak Karapetyan on Friday, September 24.

According to a press release from the Defense Ministry, the two weighed in on security issues and the situation on Armenia's borders, with Karapetyan noting Azerbaijan's actions seeking to destabilize the situation.

Bilateral cooperation in defense was also on the table.

Azerbaijani forces violated Armenia’s border in several sections in the provinces of Syunik and Gegharkunik on May 12 and 13 and are still refusing to withdraw their troops from the area. Since then, almost a dozen Armenian servicemen have been killed in Azerbaijan’s shooting, a dozen others have been wounded, while six troops were captured on May 27, although four of them have already returned home.
