Armenian nuclear plant re-connected to country's energy system

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Metsamor nuclear power plant was re-connected to the unified energy system of Armenia on October 17, after maintenance work within the project to modernize and extend the life of the NPP concluded, the press service of Rusatom Service JSC (the general contractor of the plant's modernization) reports.

This is the longest and most important preventive maintenance, which came after the adoption of a decision by the State Committee for Nuclear Safety Regulation under the Armenian Government to issue a license for operation until 2026.

The Armenian NPP celebrates the 55th anniversary of its establishment this year, after the USSR Council of Ministers made a decision to build the first nuclear power plant in the Caucasus more than half a century ago.

Metsamor is the only nuclear power plant in the South Caucasus, it produces more than a third of all electricity generated in Armenia. The project to modernize and extend the life of the second power unit of the Armenian NPP is one of the key projects of Russia and Armenia in the field of nuclear energy.
