Russia offers its Soviet maps for Armenia-Azerbaijan demarcation

PanARMENIAN.Net - Demarcation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border needs to be carried out using Soviet maps from the Russian Defense Ministry, Chairwoman of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko said at a meeting with Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Sahiba Gafarova on Thursday, November 25.

Today, according to Matviyenko, the main task is to demarcate the border in a way that no side would want to resume hostilities.

"Russia offered assistance, given that the maps of the Soviet period are kept only in our Ministry of Defense. They are calibrated, precise, and define the exact borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan," Matviyenko said.

"Negotiations can be conducted confidently using these maps, and Armenia and Azerbaijan support this approach. There is understanding and agreement, but the process is progressing slowly. Because of this, tensions remain."

She noted that Russia is interested in "a peaceful, stable Transcaucasia and the peaceful life of people" and will do everything necessary to achieve this.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev on November 9, 2020 signed a statement to end the war in Karabakh after almost 45 days. Under the deal, the Armenian side returned all the seven regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, having lost a part of Karabakh itself in hostilities.
