Armenian Parliament receives President's resignation

PanARMENIAN.Net - The National Assembly has received a notification on the resignation of Armenian President Armen Sarkissian, spokesperson for the parliament's president Tsovinar Khachatryan said Monday, January 24, Aysor.am reports.

Sarkissian resigned on Sunday, according to a statement on his official website.

The President's resignation will take effect if Sarkissian does not withdraw it within the next 7 days.

According to the country's Constitution, "in the event of removal from office of the President of the Republic, impossibility to exercise the powers thereby, resignation or death thereof, an extraordinary election of the President of the Republic shall be held not earlier than twenty-five and not later than thirty-five days after the office of the President of the Republic becomes vacant."

Before a newly-elected President takes office, the powers of the President will be exercised by the President of the National Assembly.
