The parliament on Wednesday failed to elect Khachaturyan, who up until now served as the country's Minister of High Tech Industries, in the post. The opposition refused to take part in the vote, while the ruling Civil Contract party does not have sufficient representation, since it is necessary to gather at least 80 votes, and Civil Contract has only 71 lawmaker. In the second round, 64 votes would have been enough to elect him as president. On Thursday, the opposition did not participate in the vote. Khachaturyan was a member of the Armenian National Congress until his resignation in 2017. He led the ANC list in the 2013 Yerevan City Council election, but currently is not a member of any party.
