70 people detained as opposition renews disobedience campaign

The opposition in Armenia renewed its campaign of civil disobedience" in Yerevan on Tuesday, May 3 morning, marching through the streets of the capital and blocking the driveways.

Several of the biggest streets were blocked by protesters before the police used force to remove and detain some of them, Pastinfo reports.

Supporters of the opposition blocs "I Have Honor" and "Armenia" have taken to the streets for several days now to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

When the police attempted to remove the demonstrators from one of their locations, they met resistance, Aravot.am reports

The younger son of ex-President Robert Kocharyan, Levon Kocharyan, is participating in the campaign too, who revealed on his Telegram channel that the police were taking him to a precinct in the city's north.

As of 10 am, the police have detained 70 people. According to Arsen Babayan from Homeland party, 30 of their members are among those detained.

Meanwhile, the rapid response teams of the Human Rights Defender's office have left for police stations to make sure that the rights of detainees are protected.

Pashinyan himself staged a massive disobedience campaign back in the spring of 2018 and removed then Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan who had been in power for 10 years. The PM, however, came under fire after signing a statement with the Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents to end the war in Nagorno-Karabakh almost 45 days after the start of the military hostilities. Under the deal, the Armenian side was forced to cede all the regions surrounding Karabakh to Azerbaijan, having lost a part of Karabakh itself in hostilities.
