Armenia decides to formally apply to Russia, CSTO, UN

Armenia has decided to formally apply to Russia, the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the United Nations amid Azerbaijan's large scale aggression that has been targeting military and civilian infrastructure along the border.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan chaired a session of the Security Council in the wee hours of Tuesday, September 13, with the participation of President Vahagn Khachaturyan and the President of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan in addition to the Security Council members.

“Further steps aimed at counteracting the aggressive actions by Azerbaijan against the sovereign territory of Armenia that started at midnight were discussed at the meeting,” Pashinyan’s office said.

“A decision was made to officially apply to the Russian Federation for the implementation of the provisions of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, to the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the UN Security Council regarding the aggression against the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia.”

The Defense Ministry said on Tuesday morning that the situation had not changed significantly, with the Azerbaijani military continuing to shell the Armenian positions and civilian homes. Photos published online show damage to residential buildings in villages situated the closest to the border.

During the 2022 Kazakh unrest, which was a series of mass protests that began in Kazakhstan on 2 January 2022 after a sudden sharp increase in liquefied gas, the CSTO deployed troops to the country, with Pashinyan sending Armenian peacekeepers too.
