Armenia, UN discuss Azerbaijan’s aggression, Karabakh blockade

On February 27, Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan had a meeting with Director-General of UN Geneva Tatiana Valovaya and drew her attention to Azerbaijan’s aggression both against Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh.

Mirzoyan weighed in on Azerbaijan's large-scale aggression unleashed against the sovereign territory of Armenia in September 2022, as well as to the situation in the region resulting from the illegal blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh since December, 2022. In this context, Mirzoyan emphasized the need for the relevant UN bodies to evaluate the situation on the ground and actively engage.

Both sides noted the importance of the decision made by the International Court of Justice on February 22 regarding the request for provisional measures.

During the meeting, the two also touched upon issues on regional stability and peace.

Since December 12, the sole road connecting Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia - the Lachin Corridor - has been blocked by self-described Azerbaijani environmentalists. Karabakh residents have reported food and fuel shortages, while hospital patients don't have access to essential medicines, with only a handful allowed transfer to facilities in Armenia proper.
