Armenia sheds light on obstacles to peace treaty with Azerbaijan

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia and Azerbaijan have not yet agreed on a number of key issues for concluding a peace treaty, including maps the the border delimitation should be based on, Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan said told reporters in parliament on Monday, June 19.

"Unfortunately, at the moment there is no agreement on the map that the further process of delimitation and demarcation should be based on," Kostanyan said, Sputnik Armenia reports.

According to him, there is also no consensus on the institution of guarantors of the security and rights of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, the dialogue between Stepanakert and Baku. The Deputy Minister stated that the positions of the parties are quite far from each other, but added that work continues.

Kostanyan noted that growing tension on the part of Azerbaijan on the border with Armenia and in Nagorno-Karabakh does not contribute to the establishment of peace and stability in the region. This trend, he said, also casts doubt on Baku's statements about its interest in establishing peace.

In recent days, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces have been periodically shelling Armenian positions in different parts of the border. Last week, the Azerbaijani side fired twice at a metallurgical plant currently under construction in the village Yeraskh, injuring two civilians.
