Canada will make contribution to the civilian monitoring mission of the European Union in Armenia (EUMA), according to a draft decision published on the EU Council’s official website.

The specific amount of support is not specified, Arka.am reports.

The Political and Security Committee of the EU Council, in particular, recalled that the Council had earlier authorized to accept assistance from third countries for the monitoring mission’s operation. The EU Delegation in Armenia was identified as the recipient of the assistance.

The decision was made on the basis of the recommendation of the leadership of the EU monitoring mission.

“The contribution from Canada to the European Union Mission in Armenia (EUMA) is accepted and is considered to be significant. Canada is exempted from financial contributions to the budget of EUMA”, the decision reads.

The EU Mission in Armenia was deployed on February 20, 2023 on the Armenian side of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. It is tasked with observing and reporting on the situation on the ground; contributing to human security in conflict-affected areas and based on the above, contributing to build confidence between populations of both Armenia and Azerbaijan and, where possible, their authorities․ The Mission has a two-year mandate and involves up to 100 staff, including EU experts and monitors. The Operational Headquarters of the mission is in Yeghegnadzor, in Armenia’s Vayots Dzor province.
