Armenia, Germany talk regional stability, security

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his German counterpart Analena Berbock on Tuesday, September 5 to discuss issues of stability and security in the region.

Referring to the actions of the armed forces of Azerbaijan against the sovereign territory of Armenia on September 1, 4 Mirzoyan emphasized that it was another manifestation of Azerbaijan's continuous aggressive behavior. The Armenian foreign policy chief added that with its actions Azerbaijan is trying to destabilize the situation in the South Caucasus, which should be condemned by the international community.

Parallel to this, the daily worsening humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh and its consequences for the population of Nagorno-Karabakh, especially for vulnerable groups, and the urgency of overcoming the crisis were emphasized on both sides. Mirzoyan reiterated Armenia’s position regarding the lifting of the blockade of the Lachin corridor in accordance with the Orders of the International Court of Justice and emphasized the need for international actors, including the EU, to take clear steps in that direction.

Highly appreciating the targeted appeals made by the partners so far, Mirzoyan emphasised that, unfortunately, they are not enough to register a positive change on the ground, to lift the factual blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh and to return Azerbaijan to a constructive track.

Possible steps to advance the bilateral cooperation agenda between Armenia and Germany were also touched upon.

Since December 12, 2022, the sole road connecting Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia - the Lachin Corridor - has been blocked by Azerbaijan. Baku tightened the blockade on June 15, 2023, banning emergency relief supplies that were carried out by Russian peacekeepers and the International Committee of the Red Cross through the sole road connecting Karabakh to Armenia and the outside world. The move aggravated the shortages of food, medicine and other essential items experienced by the region’s population. On August 15, Karabakh Human Rights Defender’s office reported the first case of death from starvation.
