Opinion: backing Azerbaijani assault on Armenia harms Israel’s interests

PanARMENIAN.Net - Israel has cultivated a strategic alliance with Azerbaijan, making it a cornerstone of its policy in the South Caucasus. However, Baku's actions, particularly its ambitions for Armenia's sovereign territory, are becoming a cause for concern, reads an opinion published by The Jerusalem Post.

According to the piece, Azerbaijan's pursuit of the so-called Zangezur corridor in Syunik, southern Armenia, indicates plans for further aggression, which could undermine Israel's interests in the region. As observers of regional developments, we appeal to Israel to deter its ally from pursuing such a destructive course.

The Azerbaijani regime, led by President Ilham Aliyev, provides Israel with oil, purchases advanced weaponry, and offers a strategic position for countering Iranian influence. While this partnership has its merits from a realpolitik perspective, it is tied to a government often criticized as one of the most authoritarian in the world.

For Azerbaijan, the benefits of this alliance were evident in its conflict over Nagorno Karabakh. Reports suggest Israeli weapons played a critical role in Baku's decisive victory, which resulted in the ethnic cleansing of 120,000 Armenians in September 2023. Israel’s ongoing support for Azerbaijan, given these developments, could have long-term consequences for its reputation and strategic interests.
