Mirzoyan, Lammy discuss peace treaty and cooperation

PanARMENIAN.Net - During a phone conversation on March 21, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Lammy discussed the regional situation and recent developments.

In the context of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, Mirzoyan presented the ongoing work on a peace and interstate relations agreement, underlining the importance of Armenia’s proposal to sign the document based on the agreed text. He thanked Lammy for the UK’s support and clear stance in favor of the peace process.

Mirzoyan also addressed Azerbaijan’s disinformation about ceasefire violations by Armenia, stressing that Yerevan had proposed a mechanism for joint investigation, which has so far gone unanswered by Baku. He added that such initiatives, along with proposals to reopen regional transport links, could help build mutual trust and foster regional stability.

The ministers also discussed opportunities for bilateral cooperation on international platforms. Mirzoyan briefed Lammy on the preparations underway for hosting the COP17 summit in Armenia and emphasized the importance of close collaboration with the UK in this area.

On March 13, Armenia’s Foreign Ministry announced that it had accepted Azerbaijan’s proposals on two previously unresolved articles of the peace agreement, stating the deal was now ready for signing. Yerevan expressed readiness to begin consultations on the time and venue. However, Baku introduced new preconditions and declared it premature to discuss the meeting timeline.

The draft peace treaty includes 17 clauses, 15 of which had already been agreed upon. The unresolved articles concerned mutual renunciation of international claims and the non-deployment of third-country representatives along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.
