Former President insists impeachment in motion

PanARMENIAN.Net - Armenia’s third president, Serzh Sargsyan, declared that the process to impeach Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan “has already started.” Speaking to Auroranews.am, he explained, “The process begins when one MP nominates a prime minister candidate.”

When reminded that bringing the matter to the National Assembly’s agenda requires at least 36 signatures, Sargsyan replied, “We’ll bring it to the floor once we have 54. What does 36 have to do with it? That’s a bad number.”

Tigran Abrahamyan, MP from the “I Have Honor” faction, commented on the “Armenia” faction’s stance, telling Panorama.am that chances still remain for political forces to find common ground on impeachment. “There are differences in approaches on some points, but I don’t think the possibility of agreement is exhausted,” he said while speaking to reporters at Komitas Park.

Abrahamyan noted that the response from the “Armenia” faction was somewhat unexpected but believes the healthiest step now is to join the initiative. He said they heard explanations from the “Armenia” faction about their current hesitation to sign and received assurances that they will eventually add their signatures.

He emphasized that many members of the “Armenia” faction are people he knows and respects, and who understand the seriousness of the situation. “The political situation is such that the work is happening on several fronts,” Abrahamyan concluded.

Previously, “Armenia” faction leader Seyran Ohanyan posted the group’s 28 signatures on Facebook, noting they were insufficient to initiate impeachment. MP Ishkhan Saghatelyan said the process would only advance with two more signatures and the launch of street protests.
